Maple leaves are a distinct icon in Canadian culture, prominently reflected in the flag, and immediately identifiable. Many species also go absolutely nuts with fall colour with the right conditions, making them an excellent subject. When these leaves start falling, they quickly turn into flakes and crunchy bits of detritus which are pretty unrecognizable from their original fall glory. With that said, for a very brief period before they dry out, fallen maple leaves can create absolute carpets of beauty along the ground everywhere around here. And if you time it right, a fresh first frost can really bestow a scene with some additional character.
