A Chinook looms over a large mountain and frozen lake at sunset

Chinook Melt – 2026

This was Scott and I’s first stop when arriving in the Rockies. We had no idea of what to expect, and were looking forward to getting out on the lake to look for interesting ice formations, and hopefully some tasty light.

Unfortunately, it had been warmer than expected in the area, so the lake was looking… a bit wetter than we’d like to walk on. We ended up hunting for some scenes on shore, and were greeted by an incredible chinook creating dramatic layered clouds. All in all the lack of thick ice was kind of a blessing as it forced me to explore an area I wouldn’t have investigated previously, leading to this image.
