I’ve always felt that the best landscape images often have a few things in common – great light, a strong composition, and a strong subject. If you can catch all three in one image you tend to find some success.
This was one of my favourite images from 2019 where I thought all three elements of an interesting image came together for me. Seeing this come into frame from an airplane was without a doubt one of my favourite photography experiences I’ve ever had.
For me, what makes this image special is the way this glacier wraps around a beautiful mountain, draped in early-morning light but shaded by the peak, before drifting off into the distant ice fields behind. This, for me, is the epitome of what Kluane National Park in the Yukon offers: a land of towering peaks, shaped by massive and moving glaciers. The park oozes mystery and drama, especially from the air.
