methane bubbles on a frozen lake under mountains at sunset

Mercury – 2023

This was an exciting night. I’ve come to this lake before, but I’ve never managed to time my visit properly – always just in time to see the ice after a big warm up. This usually means the ice becomes a bit milky and less enticing. This year, however, would be different. My friend and I turned up at just the right moment to capture the ice and bubbles with some excellent clarity. Now, shooting here isn’t overly complicated if you get the timing right, but there are some things which need consideration – you need to expect to spend some time looking for a nice pattern, so rushing isn’t ideal.

Unfortunately, my friend and I got caught up shooting at another location before this and we left just early enough to have to rush for this photo. Great. Normally I’d be really disappointed and running around like a maniac to try and make something work, but not today. We’d visited earlier and marked 4 different compositions on GPS, and it was just a matter of following the map coordinates. Planning to the rescue! We’d never have found the same spots again otherwise. In the end, I had only a handful of exposures before the sunlight was off the mountain.
