Bloodroot leads the way to a central forest tree

Pushing Through – 2026

Early spring can be a great time for photography near where I live.  There are a whole lot of different plants which specialize in jumping up after the winter thaw in time to catch just a bit of light and flower before the overhead trees and brush drown out all the light – the Spring ephemerals.  As a result, the flowers from plants like these can be extremely transient.

I spotted this lovely little spot in very early spring while there wasn’t yet a ton of green to work with, and these little flowers were springing up everywhere.  I tried to come back one week later to photograph this spot again, and they were already completely gone.  Incredible how scenes like this can appear for a few days, and then they’re gone for at least a year, maybe forever.  What a fun type of scene to chase!
